Aerial work platforms are specialized vehicles used to transport workers and equipment to work sites and perform aerial operations.
(1) Diverse product types, small batches. Due to the diverse needs of industries such as street lighting, landscaping, power, petrochemicals, and communications, the applications of aerial work platforms vary significantly, leading to substantial differences in specifications and technical parameters. These industry-specific products are characterized by strong specialization, high personalization requirements, numerous varieties and specifications, and small market segments, resulting in small production batches for each product specification.
(2) High technical requirements and high added value. Aerial work platforms involve technologies from numerous fields such as automotive, machinery, electrical, computer, and automation, making them typical technology-intensive products. Customers have high requirements for product safety and operability, necessitating strong R&D capabilities from manufacturers to meet these demands. Furthermore, products, especially those with large working heights and customized for the power industry, typically have high unit value and high added value.
(3) Suitable for specialized small and medium-sized enterprises. The aerial work platform (ALP) industry is characterized by its small scale, diverse product range, high specialization, high technology content, high safety requirements, and significant differentiated needs. It typically requires customized production, making mass production of single-specification products difficult. This makes it suitable for specialized small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), while large enterprises cannot dedicate the necessary technological R&D resources, market development resources, and management efforts to it as a leading industry. These industry characteristics restrict the entry of large enterprises. For example, large Chinese companies such as XCMG and Zoomlion entered the ALP industry in the mid-1990s and early 2000s. After years of operation, Zoomlion only had five product announcements in 2013, with annual sales of around 20 units, and XCMG's annual sales were also only around 20 units. In the international ALP field, the top 10 manufacturers are all specialized manufacturers of ALPs and related special vehicles.
(4) High entry barriers. Because special vehicles belong to the automotive industry, my country has strict regulations on enterprise access, registered capital, foreign equity ratios, and product registration, certification, inspection, and defect recalls.
(5) Seasonal demand is quite obvious. Users of aerial work platforms are mainly concentrated in industries such as power, municipal and landscaping. Due to the influence of the budget management system and procurement system of national administrative institutions and large state-owned enterprises such as power companies, the shipment volume of aerial work platforms in the fourth quarter accounts for about 40% of the annual volume.
